faq

To prepare you for the meeting with your cake designer and baker , for your convenience we have listed some FAQ. Please feel free to ask any further questions you may have on your mind when you meet with us.

What do I need to bring for my consultation?
Please come prepared. Bring 2 or 3 design choices from  any magazine photos, images from websites or your own sketches. Bring your color swatches (i.e. ribbon or paint chips) lace or wedding invitations. Anything you intend to incorporate into your cake we will need to see. The consultation is free.

Can you copy a picture from a magazine?
We do it all the time!! Many people like our reproductions better than the original we are copying. We love to see new ideas. To assist you in making a choice we’ve provided a number of links on our website giving cake ideas.

What should a couple bring to their cake tasting?
The cake tasting is an opportunity for you to let your prospective cake designer know about your personal tastes and how you envision your event, so the designer can create a dream cake that will truly honour your special day. Colour swatches or embroidery designs that will be used in the wedding décor, pictures of cakes that you like, and examples of the theme you are planning will be very useful in creating a complementary cake design.

How soon do I need to order my cake?
We usually book 2-3 months before your wedding. January, February, March, October, November and December fill quickly, so it’s best to order as early as you can for these months. A 50% deposit will put you on our calendar. The balance is due 2 weeks before your wedding.

Do the prices include the fresh flowers?
Our quotation will include everything. Fresh flowers on your wedding cake if you so choose or alternatively we will provide any handmade sugar paste flowers, sugared fruit, etc. that you may choose.

What is a cake tasting?
A cake tasting is a private consultation between a couple and their baker, to decide the design, flavours and details of their wedding cake. The couple will taste samples of different available cakes and view sample designs, to make the best choice for their special day.

What other details will our cake designer want to know at the cake tasting?
Preparation is the most important ingredient of a great cake! The most important details that your cake baker will need to know are: The date and time of your event. The venue – where your event will be held. The number of guests that will be attending Indoor or outdoor event. The colour theme of your event. The floral theme of your event. Flavours that you like (or dislike!). Any important details of the ceremony involving your cake. Your budget for the cake. You should also be prepared to share the contact information of your wedding planner or florist with your cake designer.

How many people should I have cake for?
If you are serving your cake as dessert, then you will need to ensure that you have one piece available for each person on your guest list. If you are presenting the cake on a sweet table as part of a buffet, then you will need cake for between fifty and seventy five percent of your guest list.

How many flavours can I have on my cake?
You can have one unique flavour for each tier of your cake. There is no additional charge for this feature.

How many tiers can my cake be?
Don’t let the size of your guest list limit your creative approach to designing your cake! You can have as many tiers as you like – many couples are surprised to learn the number of tiers are not dependent on serving requirements. Such design elements as “dummy” tiers can add size and dimension for your dream cake. Alternately, a three-tiered cake can be made for as few as 10 people.

How do I set up my cake? Do I have to pick it up?
We know your day is going to be very busy! We will deliver and set up your cake (unless otherwise agreed to). You can be certain that your cake will be set up professionally and on time.

How much is my cake going to cost?
Wedding cakes are very labour-intensive, and prices vary depending on the type of cake, decoration, size, and other factors. I am a contemporary designer of custom wedding cakes – each of which is a unique creation. That makes it difficult to price your cake with any certainty before your private consultation with me. Don’t be afraid to discuss your budget at the cake tasting consultation – this is the chance to give me the opportunity to find a way to match the vision of your dream cake with your budget. Several factors are considered when pricing your dream wedding cake: How many guests do you wish to serve? The number of servings you want your cake to have is the most important factor to consider when pricing your cake. What design elements are you looking for? Intricate designs, fresh-cut flowers, elaborate tiers, complicated patterns and uncommon ingredients will add a unique flair to your wedding cake, but may incur some additional cost. When you have your private consultation, I can give you a clear understanding of the possibilities and costs, as well as alternatives and ideas to enhance the vision of your dream cake. There are two other popular alternatives to the traditional large wedding cake – using a “dummy cake”, and using a “dummy cake” in combination with slab or sheet cake. “Dummy” cakes are a great option for those who want to have a big cake without a big price tag. A “dummy” cake can be as simple or elaborate as you can imagine! Because the possibilities are limitless, it is impossible to give any price quote without a consultation.
